En un tiempo sin tiempo y en una tierra sin ley, Tita Basante, princesa indígena depositaría de la tradición ancestral de los juglares, con la fuerza del amor y el poder de la música que es su herencia, se enfrenta al mal encarnado en Nuncia Pompeya, cruel y despiadada contrabandista quien anhela ser la más poderosa mujer del Caribe entero. Por culpa de ese anhelo, Nuncia se obsesiona por conseguir el amor y las tierras de “el Macho Cárdenas”, quien la desprecia, enamorado como está de la humilde Tita Basante.
Nuncia en su revancha contra el único hombre que la ha rechazado, le robará a Tita la ilusión, el amor y hasta la vida, lo que terminará por transformar a Tita en Tormenta de Amor, cantante de romances vallenatos, que un día regresará para recuperar lo que Nuncia le arrebató. 20 años después, Tormenta y los Chamorros son llamados a amenizar una fiesta en casa del Gobernador Poncho Lasso, un general que llegó a San Juan a imponer orden, con un dolor en el alma que solo Tormenta con su voz logró sanar. Los músicos amenizan la fiesta de compromiso entre Miranda, hija del General, y Arturito Ovalle, hijo de Nuncia. En la parranda Tormenta descubre en Miranda un dolor parecido al suyo, esta le cuenta que no ama a Arturito, sino a Leandro, pero nada puede hacer, el matrimonio está arreglado. Tormenta conmovida, escapa con Miranda y le ayuda a encontrarse con Leandro, desconociendo que es su propio hijo.
En esta odisea, Tormenta se reencuentra con el Macho, y descubre que es el padre de Leandro. El Macho no la reconoce, pero empieza a quererla de nuevo, esta vez no como Tita sino como Tormenta. Poncho Lasso captura a todos, perdona a la cantante por ser la voz que cura sus penas, y condena a muerte al Macho y a su hijo. Tormenta, aún enamorada, se sacrifica por ambos y pide a Poncho dejarlos en libertad a cambio de ser su esposa. El General acepta. Tormenta se va con él, pero al tiempo se fuga con el Macho, Poncho los descubre, intenta cobrar la traición, pero termina asesinado por manos de Nuncia y Arturito, quien toma el poder y condena a muerte a Tormenta y al Macho por la supuesta muerte del general.
A punto de morir, Tormenta cuenta al Macho que es Tita y que nunca ha dejado de amarlo. El Macho encuentra en la verdad la razón para seguir luchando contra Nuncia, Arturito y un destino trágico que no deja de cernirse contra ellos, día tras día.
