Merlina González, diseñadora y líder de un grupo de artesanos de joyas de plata, ve absurda la predicción que su prima Loreta, experta en astrología, le da como regalo el día de su cumpleaños: “Los astros anuncian la próxima llegada del amor”. Lo ve absurdo porque en sus planes inmediatos no está enamorarse. Su principal sueño es sacar a su familia de la pobreza, hacer que los artesanos, a través de sus diseños en plata, consigan ser los primeros en el mercado sin necesidad de intermediarios. Por lo anterior, Merlina se opone a que los artesanos, a los cuales pertenece su familia, acepten firmar el contrato que Carbó Joyeros les propone.
Merlina considera que el interés de Carbó Joyeros en los artesanos, es únicamente por competencia. Regina Carbó, asidua creyente de la astrología, ha sido sentenciada por su astrólogo de cabecera, Tirso Lapiel, sobre el inminente peligro que corre su familia, con la próxima alineación de los planetas. En el poder, dos mujeres serán su salvación, y otras dos mujeres sus verdugos. Esto solo podrá evitarse, si el planeta Marte, que está representado en su nieto Santiago, se une en el amor a una mujer regida por el planeta Venus. Santiago regresa al país por petición de su abuela, Regina, para integrarse al negocio de la familia. Su meta es ocupar la presidencia de Carbó Joyeros, y para ello debe lograr que los artesanos que se han convertido en su gran competencia, sean absorbidos por la empresa.
Él, que es un joven ejecutivo a quien jamás le ha interesado el amor, tiene otra condición impuesta por su abuela para heredar la presidencia: casarse y formar un hogar que le garantice la estabilidad emocional que tanto se necesita para manejar un negocio como Carbó Joyeros. La abuela Regina sabe lo renuente que es Santiago en todo lo relacionado con el amor, y siendo consciente de que quien se case con su nieto debe ser una mujer de su nivel social, Regina desde hace un tiempo ha contratado como diseñadora de joyas de la empresa a Angélica Herrera, una mujer inteligente, bella y de mundo, que seguramente le agradará a Santiago. Lo que la abuela ignora es que aparecerá en la vida de Santiago otra mujer que le robará el corazón: Merlina.
