La acción se desarrolla en la época actual en un pueblo imaginario llamado Puerto Adentro, en donde vive Melquisedec Ahumada con sus hijos Soledad, Dámaso y Magdalena. Melquisedec es el hombre más rico del lugar y ha educado a su hija mayor Soledad como si fuera el hombre que el deseó como primogénito. Soledad, que al empezar la historia tiene 25 años, sin dejar de ser mujer, desprecia a los hombres, pues considera a todos inferiores a ella.
De otra parte, Daniel Clemente ha ganado al juego una hacienda vecina a la de Melquisedec Ahumada y viaja a Puerto Adentro. Desde su llegada se fascina con Soledad, a quien quiere hacer su esposa a toda costa. En la noche en que Daniel Clemente gana la hacienda al juego, inicia una relación con Victoria, la dueña del apartamento donde se estaba jugando, relación que marca definitivamente a Victoria, quien no puede prescindir del amor de Daniel.
Al llegar Daniel a Puerto Adentro causa un gran revuelo entre todas las mujeres bellas del lugar; Elda que es una muchacha liberada y que ha sido amante de tres hombres antes de conocer a Daniel; Magdalena, la hermana de Soledad, Soledad y la misma Victoria, quien ha llegado allí para casarse con Melquisedec.
Así pues, la vida de Daniel es una lucha constante por lograr la riqueza del padre de Soledad, por conquistar el amor de esta y por defenderse de los celos de Melquisedec Ahumada, que no quiere perder su lugar como el hombre más importante de la región. Daniel se ve asediado por cuatro mujeres diferentes, cada cual lo quiere a su manera; Soledad, el amor altivo-orgulloso; Magdalena, el amor romántico hasta la locura; Victoria, el amor lujurioso y obsesivo, y Elda, el amor del sexo, por el sexo y para el sexo.
Cuando finalmente y después de muchas peripecias, Daniel ha conseguido todo, riqueza, poder y sobre todo a Soledad, las ansias de venganza de Victoria, que se siente despreciada por Daniel, logran derrumbar todo el paraíso que Daniel había hecho y este tiene que volver a empezar de nuevo. El final es desconcertante, sorprendente e inesperado.
The action takes place in the present day in an imaginary town called Puerto Adentro, where Melquisedec Ahumada lives with his children Soledad, Dámaso and Magdalena. Thus, Daniel's life is a constant struggle to achieve the wealth of Soledad's father, to win her love and to defend himself from the jealousy of Melquisedec Ahumada who does not want to lose her place as the most important man in the region. . When finally and after many adventures, Daniel has obtained everything, wealth, power and especially Soledad, Victoria's desire for revenge, who feels despised by Daniel, manages to collapse the entire paradise that Daniel had made and he has to return to start again. The ending is puzzling, surprising and unexpected.
