La Madre, magistralmente interpretada por Margarita Rosa de Francisco, es la historia de una mujer, madre de cinco hijos, quien trabaja de camarera en un hotel y que en su intento por sacar adelante completamente sola a sus hijos, tras el abandono de su esposo, sacrifica su vida, su tiempo y su corazón. Parecería resignada a la soledad hasta que aparece una luz en su camino. Un hombre que a diferencia de su marido la admira y le reconoce todo el sacrificio y el amor que ha dado.
Pero ella, mucho más acostumbrada a dar que a recibir, interpone la difícil tarea de mantener a sus hijos en el camino del “bien” a su propia felicidad. ¿Pero cómo hace una mujer con cinco hijos para pensar en amor cuando tiene que afrontar situaciones como la de su hija mayor, atractiva y ambiciosa, dispuesta a todo para alcanzar lo deslumbrante de la vida de clase alta, inclusive a perder su dignidad y a vender su cuerpo? ¿Esto se compensa con una hija más joven y llena de convicciones que intentará a toda costa salir adelante, y ser como su mamá, una mujer de bien, pero que ha tenido la mala suerte de ser la mujer de quien se enamora un mafioso? ¿Y el otro hijo, dispuesto también a llegar muy lejos, no importa a qué costo así sea convirtiendo a su mamá en la madre de un asesino? Y el menor que ha entendido que hay solo dos maneras en un país como este para salir de pobre: el delito y el deporte. Él está dispuesto a llegar muy lejos, como basquetbolista. Siempre es mejor ser Michael Jordan que traqueto. Es más difícil, pero es mejor.
¿Y qué decir del más pequeño que se debate entre seguir a su hermano deportista y el facilista? Ambos héroes. Ambos llenos de sueños. No es fácil pensar en el amor, tampoco, cuando en una mujer como ella se fija en Andrés, padre de dos hijos, viudo y necesitado, pero el amor tendrá que triunfar. Ellos tendrán que entender que en sus circunstancias el amor es compañía, solidaridad, llegar juntos a mañana. ¿Ella mientras tanto se preguntará constantemente qué hizo mal para que unos hijos escogieran tan mal su camino? ¿Qué hizo bien para que otros insistieran en la dificultad y en los principios? ¿Qué tiene de malo que ella se dé otra oportunidad en la vida y encuentre finalmente el amor, aun cuando su marido está pidiendo otra oportunidad, justo cuando ella encontró la suya? Además, están las amigas, compañeras de trabajo, todas madres, todas llenas de dudas, de soledades y necesidades y el amigo incondicional que parecería una de ellas.
