La historia comienza en el momento en que el patriarca Manuel María, enamorado de la negra Sixta, la deja en embarazo. La herida que ese hecho causa en Matilde de Solaz, la lleva a expulsar de la hacienda a la recién parida Sixta, quien ante el dolor por su destierro y que Manuel María le arrebate al recién nacido, maldice a la estirpe de los Solaz, augurando que toda mujer que lleve en su vientre al hijo de un Solaz morirá durante el parto, y anuncia que la maldición solo cesará cuando lo que hoy separaron se vuelva a unir. A partir de este momento y por tres generaciones más, la maldición se irá cumpliendo y serán Ignacio y Mariana, en la última generación, quienes en la lucha por su amor, reúnan la raza blanca y la raza negra que separará Matilde el día del nacimiento de Maximiliano.
La historia se desarrolla en el universo de la caña de azúcar, en donde conviven los blancos propietarios de la tierra con los negros trabajadores, y la vida de todos ellos se ve afectada por la ocurrencia de hechos que parecen confirmar el poder de la maldición de Sixta sobre la familia de Manuel María Solaz.
