La tarde del 4 de noviembre de 1990, César Rincón recibe una mortal cornada en su muslo derecho mientras entra a matar a un pequeño toro de nombre “Baratero”, en la plaza de Palmira. Inmediatamente, es llevado al hospital para intervenirlo, y es en ese momento cuando Rincón deja de ser el gran torero para convertirse en un hombre más, un hombre a quien se le escapa la vida segundo a segundo. Así comienza “Puerta Grande”.
Retomando la historia de César en su infancia, esta serie muestra al pequeño hijo de un fotógrafo bogotano que juega con sus amigos de barrio a ser torero, un sueño que con gran sacrificio, temple y dedicación, a medida que pasa su infancia y su adolescencia, comienza a tornarse realidad. Son innumerables los inconvenientes que César debe enfrentar, pero con la ayuda de Gonzalo, su padre y el consejo de Terencio, viejo librero de su barrio, debuta como novillero y más tarde toma la alternativa el 8 de diciembre de 1982. En este momento de su vida conoce a Paloma Galdés, una hermosa rejoneadora española que le roba el corazón.
Para César ahora todo es diferente y en medio de su precaria situación económica logra viajar a España por primera vez, donde nunca llega a ver su rostro en un cartel importante. Allí recibe la terrible noticia de la muerte de su madre María Teresa y su hermana Sonia, regresando a su patria derrotada y abatido para comenzar de nuevo. En su vida hasta el momento solo ha visto “las malas”, para el colmo se agudiza el antagonismo con “El Cordero”, su rival de infancia y a causa de una huelga de toreros el trabajo escasea. Pero de pronto aparece una luz y conoce a Luis Álvarez, quien será su apoderado y lo llevará dos veces más a España. En su segundo viaje con Álvarez, César logra llegar a la Feria de San Isidro para triunfar en “Las Ventas”, la más importante plaza del mundo, y salir por la “Puerta Grande”. La tarde del 21 de mayo de 1991 es el comienzo de su carrera triunfal, que por siempre tendrá como premisa el tema que el viejo Terencio tantas veces le repitió “... sin trampas César... sin trampas”.
