“María” es la historia de un amor imposible, alimentado por la esperanza y perpetuado por la muerte. María, siendo aún niña, queda huérfana y crece como una hija más en el hogar de sus primos Efraín y Emma. Al terminar sus estudios secundarios, Efraín regresa a casa. Al poco tiempo, entre él y María nace un inmenso amor que Efraín cree incestuoso al considerar que se ha enamorado de su propia hermana. Cuando conoce la verdad, su amor hacia ella se manifiesta abiertamente. La felicidad se ve interrumpida cuando Carlos, el mejor amigo de Efraín, propone matrimonio a María. Sin embargo, el amor por Efraín es más fuerte: María rechaza la propuesta de Carlos. Posteriormente, aparece en la hacienda el apuesto teniente Barrientos quien, por el interés que le suscita María, provoca los celos de Efraín, situación que termina con un desafío a duelo que por fortuna no es aceptado por el militar. Barrientos, después de aclararlo todo, se despide del lugar, para tranquilidad de Efraín.
Una amenaza mayor irrumpe en la vida de los dos jóvenes enamorados: el padre de Efraín se empecina en que su hijo se vaya a estudiar medicina a Londres, lo que precipita la vulnerabilidad de María respecto a la enfermedad que heredó de su madre: la epilepsia, que más que un mal del cuerpo, pareciera ser un dolor del corazón, por la inminente ausencia de su amado. Paradójicamente, la fragilidad de María lo que obtiene es reforzar la conveniencia del viaje de Efraín, quien supone que, estudiando medicina en Londres, podrá conocer la cura del mal que padece María.
La hora de la despedida ha llegado, Efraín viaja por fin y María, cada vez más enferma, solo se consuela con la esperanza del regreso y con las cartas de amor que le llegan desde Londres. Un año más tarde, Efraín recibe la noticia de la gravedad de María y regresa inmediatamente, trayendo en su mente la imagen de su enamorada que lo llama. Al llegar, sin embargo, María ya ha fallecido. Desconsolado, Efraín recorre los lugares en donde compartió con ella sus más bellos y finalmente, luego de escribir la historia de su infeliz amor, se pierde a todo galope en la oscuridad de la noche.
"María" is the story of an impossible love, fueled by hope and perpetuated by death. María, being still a child, is orphaned and grows up as one more daughter in the home of her cousins Efraín and Emma. After finishing his secondary studies, Efraín returns home. Soon after, an immense love is born between him and María that Efraín believes is incestuous when he considers that he has fallen in love with his own sister. When he knows the truth, her love for her is openly manifested. Happiness is interrupted when Carlos, Efraín's best friend, proposes to María. However, the love for Efraín is stronger: María rejects Carlos' proposal. Subsequently, the handsome lieutenant Barrientos appears at the hacienda who, due to his interest in María, makes Efraín jealous, a situation that ends with a challenge to a duel that fortunately is not accepted by the military. Barrientos, after clarifying everything, says goodbye to the place, to Efraín's peace of mind.
A greater threat breaks into the lives of the two young lovers: Efraín's father insists that his son go to study medicine in London, which precipitates the vulnerability of María with respect to the disease she inherited from her mother: epilepsy. , that more than a body ailment, it seems to be a heartache, due to the imminent absence of his beloved. Paradoxically, what she obtains from María's fragility is reinforcing the convenience of Efraín's trip, who supposes that, studying medicine in London, he will be able to find out the cure for the illness that María suffers from.
The hour of farewell has arrived, Efraín finally travels and María, increasingly ill, only consoles herself with the hope of her return and with the love letters that arrive from London. A year later, Efraín receives the news of María's seriousness and returns immediately, bringing in his mind the image of his lover who calls him. Upon arrival, however, Maria has already passed away. Heartbroken, Efraín goes through the places where he shared her most beautiful love with her and finally, after writing the story of her unhappy love, he is lost at full gallop in the dark of night.
