Durante los años setenta, en tiempos de carnaval de Barranquilla, el Joe es gozadera pura. Canta en la orquesta La Protesta y está comprometido para casarse con Adela, su novia de adolescencia, pero conoce a Jackieline Ramón, la hija de un empresario musical del Atlántico, dueño de la Disquera 'Discos Caribe'.
El flechazo entre los dos es inmediato y viven dos días de pasión en medio de las fiestas; sin embargo, Jackeline, por miedo a que la valoren por lo que tiene y no por lo que es, no cuenta al Joe quién es su padre. Sin embargo, Jackeline descubre en el Joe el talento que tiene de músico y promete ayudarlo a cumplir sus sueños; lo que no imagina es que después Joe se entera de su procedencia, debido a que el padre de Jackeline, Aníbal Ramón, anda buscando a un cantante para montar una orquesta y se interesa en él.
Todo parece estar bien, de no ser por Francisco, la mano derecha de Aníbal y eterno enamorado de Jackeline, quien llevado por los celos, hace firmar a Arroyo un contrato en el que queda esclavizado de por vida, dejando, de paso, por fuera del negocio a la Disquera 'Discos Caribe'. Fruko, director de Fruko & sus Tesos, queriendo que Joe trabaje con él, se da cuenta que el contrato firmado es perjudicial y al percatarse de la situación, Joe piensa que Jackeline está involucrada.
En paralelo, Aníbal descubre las intenciones de Francisco y se altera tanto que afecta su salud, momento en el cual Joe y Fruko llegan para discutir del tema, sin saber que Aníbal está empezando a sufrir de un ataque cardiaco que lo lleva a la muerte. Jackeline y su tía Cecilia, a juzgar por lo que ven, culpan a Arroyo y Fruko de lo sucedido, dejando a Francisco como el salvador y protector de la familia Ramón.
Desde ese entonces, Jackeline y Joe se declaran la guerra. Él se casa con Adela y se va con Fruko a Medellín a trabajar en 'Discos Fuentes', a pesar de que le toca pagar una cláusula de incumplimiento para poder deshacer el contrato.
