Esta es la historia de Celia Cruz, la niña no tan linda, negra, flaca y tímida, que nunca dejó de cantar y llevar un importante mensaje de libertad para su pueblo. Ella nunca se dejó llevar por la máquina de la fama, siempre se mantuvo humilde y carismática, y con compromiso logró todo lo que se proponía en la vida. Con su voz sedujo a públicos de diferentes idiomas e hizo su propia revolución: hacer de la salsa el género musical latino más importante del mundo, para ser recordado en la historia como aquella mujer que, lejos de su casa, la honró y mostró. Para nosotros no hay sueños imposibles.
En una época donde las cantantes eran catalogadas como vagabundas, Celia se abrió paso venciendo prejuicios y coronándose... como la cantante principal más importante de la famosa orquesta: “La Sonora Matancera”. Lo que parecía ser la salida a una carrera exitosa y la solución a la pobreza y la miseria, todo gracias a la música; casi desmoronarse por culpa de una Cuba, cayendo paulatinamente en la más estricta dictadura militar, que amenazaba con derribar los sueños de Celia. Ahora no solo tuvo que enfrentar los caprichos de una industria dirigida por hombres, sino también el acoso, el maltrato y la injusticia de un sistema que ella nunca aceptó. Sintiendo desvanecerse su impulso musical y pasando por un momento difícil con su familia, recibe una invitación, en 1961, para abandonar el país con la banda, sin saber que no sería temporal, sino para el resto de su vida. Desde ese viaje, Celia nunca más regresaría a Cuba, lo que significa dejar atrás a sus seres queridos, incluida su madre enferma de cáncer, para exiliarse en tierras mexicanas. A su lado, en ese momento estaba un músico de la banda “La Sonora Matancera”, quien poco a poco fue creciendo en su corazón y eventualmente se convirtió en el amor indiscutible de su vida. Se trataba del famoso mujeriego Pedro Caballero, quien cuando apareció en la vida de Celia ya tenía 2 hijas reconocidas y era un coqueto imparable, incluyendo entre sus conquistas a la hermana de Celia, Noris, quien por cierto se quedó en Cuba.
El talento y el compromiso de Celia resultaron ser más fuertes que sus problemas: la revolución cubana que la persigue, los desencuentros con Pedro, la muerte de sus padres y el eterno exilio forzado que le tocó vivir. Su nombre y encanto llegaron a Tito Puente y luego a Johnny Pacheco, quien por aquellos días reunía “La Fania All Stars” en la ciudad de Nueva York. Un grupo de los mejores músicos de Salsa del país, donde Celia sería la joya más preciada, y junto a ellos, “la Guarachera”, conquistó a cada alma que asistía a sus conciertos y a cada persona que compraba sus discos.
This is the story of Celia Cruz, the not so pretty, black, skinny and shy girl, who never stopped singing and carrying an important message of freedom for her people. She never bought into the fame machine, remained always humble and charismatic, and with commitment achieved everything she aimed in life. With her voice she seduced audiences from different languages and she made her own revolution: to make Salsa music the most important Latino music genre in the world, to be remembered in history as that woman, who far away from her home, honored it and showed us there are no impossible dreams.
In an age where female singers were classified as tramps, Celia made her way through, beating prejudices and crowning herself... as the most important lead singer of the famous orchestra: “La Sonora Matancera”. What seemed to be the way out to a successful career and the solution of poverty and misery, all thanks to music; almost crumble because of a Cuba falling gradually in the strictest military dictatorship, which threatened to bring downCelia´s dreams. Now she not only had to face the whims of an industry run by men but also the harassment, mistreatment and injustice of a system that she never accepted. Feeling her musical momentum vanished and passing a hard time with her family, she receives an invitation, in 1961, to leave the country with the band, without knowing that it would not be temporary but for the rest of her life. Since that trip, Celia would never come back to Cuba again which means leaving her loved ones behind, including her mother suffering from cancer, for exilingin Mexican lands. Beside her at the time was a musician from the band “La Sonora Matancera”, who gradually grew in her heart and became eventually the undisputed love of her life. It was the famous womanizer Pedro Knight, who by the time he showed up in Celia´s life already had 2 recognized daughters and was an unstoppable flirtatious, including among his conquest Celia´s sister, Noris, who by the way stayed behind in Cuba like all of Celia´s close friends and family.
Celia´s talent and commitment proved to be stronger than her problems: the Cuban revolution that pursues her, the disagreements with Pedro, her parent’s deaths and the eternal forced exile she had to live with. Her name and charm reached Tito Puente and then Johnny Pacheco, who in those days was bringing together “La Fania All Stars” in the city of New York. A group of the best Salsa musicians in the land, where Celia would be the most valued jewel, and along them, “la Guarachera”, conquered every soul who attended her concerts and every person that bought her records.
