Fue llevado a un orfanato a los 9 años, junto a su hermano Daniel. Escapó años después y vivió en las calles hasta cuando encontró trabajo en un puesto de flores, lo que le permitió encerrarse a beber y a leer para escapar de la realidad. Pero los libros también le regalaron el deseo de escribir. Y así lo hizo, escribió cuentos y poemas durante años. A los veinticuatro años, Leonardo abandonó todo y se fue México para hacer carrera como escritor. Allí le publicaron la novela juvenil y un libro de poemas. Pero nunca pudo volver a escribir más. Tras mucho intentar dejar el alcohol y escribir, Leonardo al fin desistió. Su vida había perdido todo sentido y había decidido suicidarse, cuando lo llamaron de Colombia para avisarle que su hermano Daniel estaba muerto.

His life had lost all meaning and he had decided to commit suicide, when they called him from Colombia to tell him that his brother Daniel was dead.
