La matrona buenona de la familia se casó con Mateo hace 28 años después de que tanto él como ella habían enviudado y Rufina había quedado sola a cargo de tres hijos pequeños: Gerardo, Rodolfo y Juan. A Rufina le molesta que sus dos hijos mayores sean apocados y sin mayores ambiciones, muy a diferencia de Juan, quien heredó el carácter de ella y es un hombre dispuesto a lo que sea por ganarse todo lo que Rufina considera que les pertenece por derecho propio.

The good-natured matron of the family married Mateo 28 years ago after both he and she had been widowed and Rufina had been left alone to raise three small children: Gerardo, Rodolfo and Juan. Rufina is annoyed that her two eldest children are diffident and without great ambitions, very unlike Juan who inherited her character and is a man willing to do anything to earn everything that Rufina considers to be theirs in their own right.
